Back in the earliest days of soap making, our ancestors used animal fats. Today it still makes for some of the best bars of soap! SHOP Animal Fats Lard – Rendered pork fat that has been used in traditional soapmaking for generations. Lard produces a firm, long-lasting bar with a mild, creamy, stable lather. It shares many soapmaking qualities with palm oil, making it a great alternative in our recipes. All of our lard comes from local farmers and is rendered right here on our farm. It really does make a wonderful bar of soap! Tallow – Rendered beef fat that has also been used in soapmaking for centuries. Tallow contributes hardness, longevity, and a rich, creamy lather to handmade soap. Like our lard, the beef fat comes from local farmers and is rendered right here on our farm whenever possible.

Our Plant Based (Vegan) Soaps are made using the finest plant based oils, butters, essential oils and fragrances. Plant Based Oils & Butters that we use in our soaps Soft Oils Castor Oil – Pressed from the seeds of the castor plant (Ricinus communis). Castor oil helps create a rich, bubbly lather and improves lather stability. It's one of my favorite soapmaking ingredients and is used in every Farmgirl Soapery soap recipe! Olive Oil – Pressed from the fruit of the olive tree. Rich in oleic acid, olive oil contributes to a gentle, conditioning bar with a creamy, low-bubble lather. It's typically the largest ingredient in my soap recipes and one of the foundations of Farmgirl Soapery soaps. Rice Bran Oil – Extracted from the outer bran layer of rice grains. Rice bran oil contains a blend of fatty acids, including oleic and linoleic acids, along with naturally occurring vitamin E compounds. In soapmaking, it contributes conditioning qualities and a smooth, creamy lather. Hard Oils & Butters Cocoa Butter – Extracted from the beans of the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao). Cocoa butter adds firmness and longevity to handmade soap while contributing to a rich, creamy, stable lather. Coconut Oil – Extracted from the meat of mature coconuts. Coconut oil is well known in soapmaking for producing large, fluffy bubbles and a firm, long-lasting bar. Because it contributes strong cleansing properties, I use it in carefully balanced amounts alongside other oils and butters. Mango Butter – Extracted from the seed kernels of the mango tree (Mangifera indica). Mango butter adds hardness and conditioning qualities to handmade soap while contributing to a smooth, creamy lather. Palm Oil – Extracted from the fruit of the oil palm tree. Palm oil helps create a firm, long-lasting bar with a stable, creamy lather. I primarily use it in my plant-based soap recipes as an alternative to animal fats. Because palm oil production can contribute to deforestation and habitat loss, I purchase RSPO-certified, responsibly sourced palm oil. Shea Butter – Extracted from the nuts of the African shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa). Shea butter is rich in fatty acids that contribute conditioning qualities, firmness, and a creamy, stable lather. Natural additives lend their own special qualities to the soap by adding nature's own nutrients and providing a unique look, color, texture and even aroma. All Natural Additives Natural additives bring something extra to our small-batch soaps, adding color, texture, gentle exfoliation, and sometimes even a little natural fragrance. Each is chosen for the unique qualities it brings to the finished bar. Activated charcoal is known for its absorbent properties and gives handmade soap a beautiful deep gray or black color. Alkanet Powder – Derived from the roots of the alkanet plant, native to Mediterranean regions. This natural colorant can produce shades ranging from soft lavender to deep purple in handmade soap, depending on the recipe and amount used. Aloe Vera Liquid – Used in place of some or all of the distilled water in select soap recipes. Aloe vera adds a little something different to our soapmaking process without changing the traditional qualities of a handmade bar. Brazilian Red Clay – A naturally occurring mineral clay that adds earthy red and terracotta tones to handmade soap. It also contributes a smooth, silky feel to the lather. Colloidal Oatmeal – Finely ground oatmeal that adds a soft, creamy feel and subtle texture to handmade soap. It's a wonderful addition to our unscented and specialty recipes. Coconut Milk – Made from the flesh of mature coconuts, coconut milk contains naturally occurring fats and sugars that contribute to a rich, creamy lather. We use it in select soap recipes in place of some of the distilled water. Essential Oils – Concentrated aromatic compounds extracted from plants, flowers, leaves, roots, and other botanical materials. We use essential oils to naturally fragrance select soaps, creating scents ranging from fresh and herbal to warm and earthy. Goat Milk – Sourced locally and used in place of some of the distilled water in select recipes. Goat milk contains natural fats and sugars that contribute to a creamy, luxurious lather. Indigo Powder – A plant-derived colorant traditionally used to produce beautiful shades of blue. In cold process soap, indigo can create colors ranging from soft blue-gray to deep blue, depending on the amount used and the recipe. Kaolin Clay – A fine, naturally occurring white clay that adds a silky feel to handmade soap. It can also help retain fragrance and contributes to a smooth, creamy lather. We use kaolin clay in nearly all of our soap recipes. Madder Root Powder – Derived from the roots of the madder plant (Rubia tinctorum), which has been used as a natural dye for thousands of years. In handmade soap, it produces shades ranging from soft pink to rich red and earthy orange. Purple Brazilian Clay – A naturally occurring mineral clay that adds lovely lavender and purple tones to handmade soap while contributing a smooth, silky feel to the lather. Raw Honey – We love using honey harvested right here on our farm! The natural sugars in honey help boost lather and encourage the soap to heat up during saponification, often producing richer colors and a slightly glossy appearance in the finished bars. My husband, James, and I have operated Silver Valley Farms in south-central Pennsylvania since 2013. My soap-making journey started with a simple question: What is actually in the products we use every day? The more I researched, the more surprised I became to learn that many "soap" bars on store shelves are actually detergent bars made with synthetic cleansers. That discovery sent me down a path of learning the traditional art and science of cold process soap making. After countless hours of research, testing, and refining recipes, Farmgirl Soapery was born. Today, every bar is still made by my own hands in small batches with one goal: Create beautiful soap that feels every bit as luxurious as it looks. What Makes Farmgirl Soapery Different? Every Farmgirl Soapery recipe starts with olive oil as the primary ingredient, carefully balanced with other oils and butters to create a hard, long-lasting bar with a rich, creamy lather.
